In Memoriam: David Frim, MD, PhD
We are saddened to convey that Dr. David Frim, former Section Chief and Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Chicago, passed away on August 22, 2023. Dr. Frim, a preeminent pediatric and congenital neurosurgeon, served as section chief of Neurosurgery for 13 years (2007 – 2020). In that time, he built a strong foundation and team in all aspects of academic neurosurgery – clinical, educational, and research. Dr. Frim also served as Program Director of the Margret Hackett Family Program (MHFP) in CNS congenital anomalies and as a leader in the development of pediatric neuroscience services at the University of Chicago Medicine.
Dr. Frim graduated from Harvard Medical School, where he also completed his doctorate in neurobiology. He then completed his Neurosurgery residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and after finishing his pediatric neurosurgery fellowship at Boston’s Childrens Hospital, he was recruited to the University of Chicago in 1996. During his many years in Chicago, Dr. Frim built a large clinical practice and was known for being a compassionate pediatric neurosurgeon, scientist, and mentor. He trained many students and neurosurgeons throughout his career. He is survived by his wife, Tammy and three son
